A rather historic department store, the Friendship Store was opened in 1973 and originally open only to foreigners and sold imported products, and it remained off limits to ordinary Chinese until the 1990s. In those days, it was virtually the only place to buy certain goods. So a visit here offers an experience similar to going to a museum or other important landmark. The store supplies nearly 100,000 varieties of goods, ranging from daily necessities to arts and crafts. Both traditional Chinese export commodities and native produce and special products of various places of China are available in this store. There are some imported items as well as quality domestic produced goods. The foreign languages book section is worth a browse for both books and foreign newspapers and periodicals.
